Prime Minister: Local Elections in Kosovo in October

BELGRADE, May 23, 2013 (BETA) - Prime Minister Ivica Dacic said on May 23 that elections for the community of Serbian municipalities in Kosovo and Metohija should take place in October, and that until then the local government in the north will have a leadership team comprising Serb representatives from the current municipal authorities.

Dacic told a news conference at the government headquarters that the Pristina government is planning to call local elections in Kosovo for October.

The leadership team will comprise the representatives of the four Serbian municipalities in northern Kosovo, who will nominate a police commander for the north and a draft statute of the community, said Dacic.

He further said that this week the Serbian government would inform EU High Representative Catherine Ashton whether it accepts the agreement on the implementation of the Brussels agreement.

Asked whether Serbs from northern Kosovo would boycott the elections, Dacic said the community of Serbian municipalities would then be led by "Thaci's Serbs".

"They can chose not to participate in the local elections, but we must be aware that the community will then be made up of Thaci's Serbs. It is clear to everyone where this ship is sailing. Either you will be on it or we do not exist", said Dacic.

The prime minister said nobody believes Serbia when it says that the government cannot control and influence the Serbs in northern Kosovo.
